To celebrate our third year wedding anniversary and Valentine's Day the wife and I went to Maui for a small vacation. We got to relax, spend quality time with each other, eat ono food and do some adventurous stuff as well.
Kayaking was great. We rented a two person plastic kayak for 25 bucks and paddled around the lagoon for an hour. Didn't see much fish or any honu but still fun. We were able to get our paddling technique down and were cruising along fairly fast. Note for next time, put sun screen on legs. My hairy legs are not enough to prevent sun burn!
On the last day we went on a catamaran and did some whale watching! The whale watching organization (Pacific Whale... something) guaranteed whale sitings or your second trip is free. Minutes after we left the harbor we encountered two humpback whales. A cow and a calf. It was amazing. First time we ever saw these animals up close. They were immense!
Other things we saw:
- Whale pectoral fin slapping the surface of the water. Pectoral fin must have been at least four feet long.
- A whale swam under the boat upside down!
- Pods of humpbacks swimming together.
- Several diving which showed those popular fluke shots everyone takes.
- A flying fish!
Can't wait to go on another whale watching boat trip. Might go earlier next time. We went at 1 pm and supposedly the 6 am trips are only 20 bucks a person for two hours. Meclizine works well to prevent sea sickness. Haha. Didn't puke!
During the trip we:
- Ate at Spago, Duo, Da Kitchen and more. All good food.
- Had shave ice twice at Local Boys. Very fine shave ice and decent syrups.
- Went to Iao Needle.
- Rented a Kia Soul. "You can get with this, or you can get with that."
- Swam in a heated infinity pool. Neat.
- Had a fun time! Aloha!
